“Geography is more than just a subject – it’s a way of understanding the interconnectedness of people and places,” shares Phạm Minh Thuan, a third-year Geography Education student in the Bright Scholars Program, about why he chose this field of study.

Growing up with his single mother Thuan faced many hardships, particularly financial struggles, and deeply understood his mother’s sacrifices. Their situation began to improve significantly when his mother joined the “Empowering Foundations for Women and Their Children” (EFWC) program sponsored by Children of Vietnam in 2010. With support from a small loan, she started a small duck porridge business, earning around $10 daily, and became the backbone of their household.
The joy doubled when COV’s support for Thuan began in 2014 through the Study Steps Program and in 2021 he received a Bright Scholars scholarship. This support further fueled his dedication to pursuing his dream of becoming a Geography teacher by covering his tuition fees, living expenses, and providing workshops and training throughout his university studies.
“I didn’t have the opportunity to travel everywhere, but I still wanted to explore the world through maps. And geography is even beyond maps; it’s about teaching others how to navigate the world, both physically and intellectually,” Thuan shares

In addition to his studies, Thuan maintains his deep passion for badminton. He finds a unique connection between the sport and his field of study. “In badminton you navigate the court and adapt to your opponent. Just as in geography you understand and adapt to the world’s dynamics,” he says. “Both require strategic thinking and adaptability.”

Thuan’s hard work and dedication have led to significant achievements in badminton:
- 1st place in men’s singles at the Danang University of Education badminton tournament (2023)
- 1st place in mixed doubles at the FPT University Open (2024)
- 1st place in men’s singles at a local tournament
Currently, Thuan teaches badminton part time to support his mother and his studies, earning around $80 per month. “I’m very happy to earn extra income to support my mother and my education through the sport I love. I hope to save more and have opportunities to travel and explore new places,” he says.
