Children of Vietnam (COV) first met Tuyen in 2021 when her mother, Nguyen Thi Mai, joined the Empowering Foundations for Women & Their Children (EFWC) program. The EFWC program is a support initiative designed for single mothers facing adversities. At this time, despite Tuyen’s familial challenges, the COV team observed her unwavering dedication to education.
Throughout her high school journey, Tuyen maintained a steady commitment to her studies— achieving an outstanding score on her entrance exam for Danang University of Medical Technology and Pharmacy. Acknowledging her determination and potential, COV extended an invitation for Tuyen to join the Bright Scholars Program and advance her educational path.
Tuyen continued to excel academically, achieving a Good Ranking in the 2022-2023 academic year. Additionally, she actively participated in various extracurricular activities organized by COV.
When asked about her perspective on the scholarship program, Tuyen shared the following:
“The COV scholarship program serves as an unwavering source of motivation and hope. It propels each student towards persistence and success in the pursuit of knowledge, opening doors to new chapters in our lives. COV’s scholarship goes beyond financial aid; it embodies compassion. This sentiment is tangible through home visits, encouraging words, and genuine care extended to us students and even my mother.”
She adds, “These experiences bridge the gap between giver and receiver, enriching us not just materially but emotionally as well. Through the scholarship program, we gain exposure to diverse viewpoints, broaden our empathy for each other’s circumstances, and cultivate a more considerate way of life.”
Tuyen spends her summer resting and enhancing her English skills through online resources and group discussions. She works to prepare herself for upcoming classes and coursework, ensuring a smooth transition into the academic year.
Beyond her commitment to education, Tuyen embodies filial piety. She actively supports her single mother in various livelihood pursuits to supplement their income. Tuyen carries important household responsibilities, serving as an admirable role model for her family.
